Only qualified arborists, grounds maintenance personnel or professional
contractors should provide installation of lightning protection
systems in trees. If you are a homeowner or business owner seeking
this type of service, please contact your local arborist or contact
IPC for additional assistance.
Lightning protection for trees is one of the fastest growing
segments of IPC and our industry. Golf courses, parks, municipalities
and larger estates are all becoming better educated to the fact
that lightning protection systems are a very effective method
of preserving and protecting prize trees.
The Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) and the Lightning Protection
Institute (LPI) have developed standards for lightning protection
installation specifically for trees. The information we reference
on our web site is in reference to the LPI standards that have
been in effect for many years. This type of system utilizes the
same specifications and cabling that applies to structural lightning
protection systems and is considered a more robust installation.
In August 2002, the TCIA adopted the ANSI A300 standard for the
installation of lightning protection systems in trees. This particular
standard uses the smaller mini cable throughout the tree and offers
other installation options. Purchase of the standard is available
by calling TCIA at 1-800-733-2622. Highlights of these standards
are available on our web site.
If you are an arborist or grounds maintenance personnel who would
like additional information on providing this service, please
